Mapasa/Yu: Australia in a Swiss Open semi-final for the first time ever
For the first time ever in the history of the Swiss Open, Australian compatriots have reached the semi-finals: the women's doubles pairing of Setyana MAPASA/Angela YU pulled off a surprise yesterday, beating the third-seeded Indonesian pairing of Kusuma/Pratiwi. The two Australians built on this success today and defeated the Indians Treesa JOLLY/Gayatri Gopichand PULLELA, who had entered the tournament as the eighth seed.
Mapasa/Yu, who are currently ranked 33rd in the world, just seven places behind the Indians, got off to a good start and won the first set 21-14. Even when the Indian pair kept scoring points in the second set and forcing their opponents to make mistakes, they did not allow themselves to be put off. Mapasa/Yu were able to maintain their lead throughout the set and won 21-15 after just 35 minutes. The Australians are now through to tomorrow's semi-finals, something that no one from their nation has ever achieved at the Yonex Swiss Open.
End result:
Setyana MAPASA/Angela YU (AUS) vs. Treesa JOLLY/Gayatri Gopichand PULLELA (IND)
21-14, 21-15
