Weng Hong Yang wins the men’s singles

Well, of course Christo Popov had imagined things differently: After 47 minutes, his shuttle flew far... further... and so far that it sailed into the net at the end of the second set. The brutal verdict: 3:21. Because he had also lost the first round to China's Weng Hong Yang 18:21, he had to admit defeat in the men's final of the YONEX Swiss Open 2025. As I said, he had imagined things differently. After the game, he still felt a little like laughing, as could be seen at the awards ceremony (see photo above). At least the Frenchman has a few consolation prizes: Valuable world ranking points, almost 8000 US dollars and a watch. As well as fond memories of this tournament, at least until the final match.

Weng Hong Yang, on the other hand, could be happy. With his success in Basel, the 25-year-old left-hander has won his sixth tournament on the badminton tour. In addition to the prize money of around 350,000 Swiss francs he has won so far, the winner of the BWF World Tour Super 300 event will receive a further 15750 US dollars. With a total prize money of 250,000 US dollars, the entire tournament is better endowed than ever before. (AWS)
